Carvalho is the author of the biography Frick*: Baseball’s Third Commissioner.  His area of expertise lies in sports media and its role in the present sports culture and its historical growth.

He worked as a sports journalist early on in his career, which has honed his eye for developing sports stories and trends. Carvalho earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1999, and is now an associate professor of journalism at Auburn University.
